The World’s Biggest Fingerprick

On Tuesday 28 July 40 children with type 1 diabetes from around Victoria visited Parliament House for Kids in the House. The Kids met with 25 Members of Parliament to tell them their compelling stories about life with this difficult disease and their hopes for a cure.

V8 Supercar driver Jack Perkins, who has type 1 diabetes, launched the World’s Biggest Fingerprick. With MPs and supporters taking part, more than 170 people joined together to prick their finger and share a moment of life with type 1 diabetes on the steps of Parliament House.

Fingerpricks are an essential part of the painful daily routine that keeps people with type 1 diabetes alive.

Changes to the Carer Payment

This information has been provided by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

The Carer Payment provides income support to carers who, because of the demands of their caring role, are unable to support themselves through substantial paid work. The Carer Payment is income and assets tested and paid at the same rate as other social security pensions. Some changes to the Carer Payment will take place from 1 July 2009.

The most important change is to the way qualification for Carer Payment is assessed. The new method that will be used from 1 July 2009 looks at the carer’s total care load.

In the half hour-long chat with host Peter Thompson, Sue discusses her modest beginnings in suburban Melbourne, her life of hard work and remarkable career success, her dedication to AFL team the Western Bulldogs and her extensive philanthropic activity, including her longstanding and very generous support of JDRF and medical research institutions.

Sue also shares moving and heartfelt stories from the touching episodes of her life, including the sad premature death of her first husband, and the short poignant life and tragic death of her daughter Danielle, from complications of type 1 diabetes.
