family100 Type 1 Diabetes Prevention StudyAre you under 30 years of age and have a relative with type 1 diabetes? Perhaps you have type 1 diabetes yourself and have family members that would like to make a contribution towards a cure.

The Type 1 Diabetes Prevention Trial is an exciting study being run across Australia and New Zealand by the Diabetes Vaccine Development Centre (DVDC). Investigators are using an insulin nasal spray vaccine to try to protect people who are genetically at risk of type 1 diabetes.

If successful, it will prevent or postpone the onset of type 1 diabetes. At the very least, participation in this non-invasive trial will provide researchers with valuable information about the processes involved in the development of type 1 diabetes.

To find out about the eligibility criteria to participate call 1300 138 712 or go to www.stopdiabetes.com.au for more information.

I am shocked that this is called a "prevention" study – this completely confuses the public – it suggests that like Type 11 it can be preventable by lifestyle. HELP
This has been one of our major "differences" to the public ie Type 1 is an auto-immune disease.
Why not label it a vaccine development study? A totally research/medical oriented term??
I find this really distressing Sincerely Geraldine Pack OAM

You are absolutely correct in saying that type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented by lifestyle, Geraldine. We do understand your distress as this is a message that JDRF also feels very strongly about.

This exciting study, however, is not looking at lifestyle. It is truly a prevention study, aiming to stop type 1 diabetes from ever happening by safely altering the immune system to stop the autoimmune attack. JDRF is funding other similar trials around the world, you can find out more about these at http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?page_id=101980

My son Callum is having his blood tested for the trial as his older brother is type 1 diabetic i don't think i could bare seeing him go through what his brother has had to. So as a mother i would do anything to stop him from getting type 1 the init trial gives me hope. Lots of people are so ignorant when it comes to type 1 diabetes yes they have the rare one only 5-15% of diabetics are type 1 people should check their facts before they judge others. My sister-in law actually said he got it because he ate too many sweets don't worry i soon put her right!!!
