In National Diabetes Week JDRF asks, Are you my type?
For National Diabetes Week 2010, JDRF contacted members of the Australian media to ask “Are you my type?”

I’m not sure what you’re thinking… I’m actually talking about type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is like type 2 diabetes in some ways – the pancreas doesn’t function correctly and the disease can lead to serious health complications like heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, stroke and amputation. Pretty serious stuff.
Type 1 diabetes is different from type 2 diabetes in a couple of important ways. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that is not preventable and is caused by a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors. Many scientists believe that environmental factors include the hygiene hypothesis or viral exposure. Not junk food.
Many children and adults with type 1 diabetes are overwhelmed by the lack of understanding in their communities about their disease. Many suffer bullying or impaired personal relationships as a result. Every person with type 1 diabetes has been told that they got diabetes because they ate too much sugar. Not true.
How can you help?
Please take the time to notify people you know as well as any media contacts you may have.
You’ll make my day and show that just maybe, you are my type.
