Georgie in Turkey 100x100 Happy diabetes versary to Georgie age 19Today is my one year diabetes anniversary. This time last year I was in a hospital room, with drips coming out of both arms, wondering what the hell was happening to me. I can’t believe 365 days has gone that fast. That day changed my life forever.

I spent the first few months of my final year of school in hospitals, waiting rooms and doctors’ offices instead of bars and clubs. Turning 18 is not much fun when you spend your Friday night with your endocrinologist.

Medtronic Paradigm 100x100 More support for insulin pumps for kidsThe Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the Australian Diabetes Council have partnered to deliver a pilot program that aims to improve the quality of life for children across NSW living with type 1 diabetes whose families may otherwise not be able to afford insulin pumps.

The Australian Government offers a subsidy towards the cost of insulin pumps of up to 80% (means tested) but the payment gap can make it difficult for children from low income families to have access to this technology.

family100 Govt Review of Carers AllowanceOne of the big things that has got our community talking is the impact on families of the government policy that currently ends most payments of the Carer’s Allowance for parents of kids with type 1 diabetes when they reach the age of 10.

JDRF CEO Mike Wilson said “Children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes need daily support from their family for the best chance of a healthy life.”
