In regional centres and smaller towns, passionate volunteers organise local Walks to bring T1D awareness and fundraising to people across Australia. Could you host your own JDRF One Walk?
The Smith Family from Esperance Western Australia hosted a JDRF One Walk in November 2015.
Mel and Greg Smith says “Our daughter Ella was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2013, and we want to do everything we can to help find a cure for her.”
“It is such a great family event where you can meet other families in the area who live with type 1 diabetes every day. There's a dozen kids in Esperance with type 1 diabetes, and it’s a great opportunity for kids to meet other kids and share their stories.”
The Esperance Walk is held in conjunction with the local Museum Village Markets, which means that after people finish the Walk, they can enjoy the food, drink, activities and market stalls in the area. Promotion was easy for the Smiths, and Mel says "The Museum Village Markets helped us promote the Walk, and we also appeared in a few local newspapers to promote the Wak as well".
“I encourage those who can to host a JDRF One Walk for your community, it is such a great experience to be able to bring the community together to support each other and raise funds for JDRF who have many type 1 diabetes research projects that they want to support. I can’t wait to do it all again!”
Host your own Walk next year
